An Island Within
TLOTB is mourning the loss of Watzi P. Equestrian.Com.My send our condolences to Dr Melanie Chew and family who lost their Hanoverian stallion in a tragic but possibly avoidable incident. The horse got intestinal colic while at his stable at the Bukit Timah Saddle Club and died 14 hours later. An operation might have avoided it, but the Singapore Turf Club does not allow horses from other clubs to use their equine hospital facilities. Even if they happen to live on the same island, have quarantined and carry a valid passport with inoculations and vaccinations all up-to-date and in order.
Jump-Off On Jump-Offs
How (and why) do you run an AM5 class if there is only one rider entered? What do you do if that rider jumps clear? Does he go to a jump-off against nobody? This amazing class took place in February.
Do you really have to ask which country this might have happened in?
Prize Bull
Jump-Off has another question on the validity of the superbly named yet inaccurately titled South East Asian Showjumping Open Championships. While the FEI champions the equitable distribution of prizes, the organizers of this oh-so-truly innovative competition have taken the initiative to offer prizes for only the 1st place winners of each of the three categories.
It’s a Ho Ho Ho Ho Holiday
Jump-Off sends our congratulations to the adviser that we shall not name who has been given the privilege to come to the financial aid of the SEA Showjumping Open Championships organizers. This supposed advisor has been converted into an equestrian philanthropist by the OC. He’s been made to fork out the lion’s share of the flight costs to bring South East Asian Showjumping Open Championships Course Designer Paul Weier out to Singapore to brief all countries on the course building aspects of this competition. Apparently the organizers don’t have enough money (or the collective will, perhaps?) to cover the costs of this briefing, and the “advisor” has been left holding the bill.
Those Juicy Cucumbers
Jump-Off readers may remember Cucumber Time from Jump-Off XXVII. Astrid Appels has sent us an e-mail informing us what she does with those big Belgian cucumbers.
“Cucumber's are usually harvested for eating and are particularly delicious when they are topped with a yoghurt and curcuma herb (+ pepper and salt). Were you implying something else??”
Astrid, we wouldn’t dare!
Wild about Dressage
A rather large male South Effrican Baboon tried to force its way into Sherry Thomas’ PJ house, presumably to have its way with visiting Australian FEI judge Irene Bakkels-Noreen. Irene is rumoured to have rung a bell, ordered it to do a turn on the forehand and leave on a loose rein.
Equestrian.Com.My’s Natasha Mustapha, also a dressage judge, discovered two silver fox cubs and their mummy hiding in the ECM residence roof. They are thought to have been on the run from the Countryside Alliance and the famous Taman Tun Hunt.
You could call it an animal attraction to dressage.
Transitions
MEM/NCAS Level 1 Instructor Trish Braithwaite is back in Kuala Lumpur after a couple of years in Indonesia. Welcome back, Trish.
MSN star kiddo Amir Zulkefle has been given a 6 month EIDP scholarship to Australia. He will be based with Australian showjumping legend and EFA/NCAS Level III coach George Sanna.
STC Equestrian Centre’s Ong Wan Ming will be spending six months in sunny Leicestershire, England. She’ll be based for 6 months with driving guru David Gulley. While she is there she will be taking the British Driving Society’s Preliminary Competency Driving Certification, the first Malaysian to attempt this test.
KL Grand Prix Back in KL
Proving that Jump-Off can move the world, we’ve managed to bring the KL Grand Prix back to Kuala Lumpur. Thank you, thank you, you can stop clapping now and send us money instead. For those of you who have no idea what we are going on about, check out Jump-Off XXVIII.
