Jump-Off XXXI
Thursday, May 20th, 2004

The page that likes enduroenthusiast's question.

No riding please, we’re having a horse show

The administrator of one of KL’s largest equestrian clubs didn’t want to allow visiting competition horses to work at the club prior to an international competition, even though the stables were opened three days before.  The administrator’s stand was “Your horses are allowed in, but you aren’t allowed to work them.”

It took the intervention of a much-maligned executive director of that club to overrule her.

No Asiad for Malaysia

As part of the new cabinet, one of first big moves of Malaysia’s new Sports Minister, Datuk Azalina Othman was to withdraw Malaysia’s bid for the 2010 Asian Games.  It left Guangzhou as the sole bidder and host-elect of Asiad XV.

With no hint of irony, her next move was to announce that sports associations must play a role in sports tourism.  “Sports tourism can help boost the country’s economy.  We are looking at requesting teams to bring pamphlets and brochures when they travel out of the country.”

Perhaps we should ask the endurance boys to distribute these brochures as they ride through the European countryside.

Too Embarrassed to Endure

In an astounding revelation on this website’s forum, EAM Endurance Chairman Lawrence Liew announced he has no intention of standing again for this position.  He revealed that he actually received more information from this website about an endurance ride the EAM is organising in his home-town of Kota Kinabalu than from the EAM itself.

TLOTB Invites Pete to Compete

You’ve got to hand it to them – they sure are optimists.  Just a few months after threatening to sanction him over Equestrian.Com.My’s writings about TLOTB, the Equestrian Federation of Singapore has written to Peter Abisheganaden inviting him to join the list of riders to be considered for the 2005 SEA Games.

Amazingly, the list includes riders like Khoo Su-Fern, Fiona Hammond, Sumana Rajarethnam, James Ng and Catherine Oh.  All, like Pete, have quit jumping, some as far back as 1995.

Jump-Off can only surmise that it has taken them just 9 years to realize they haven’t produced any new riders that jump 1.30 – 1.40 m.

Beutifule Enurance News

Here’s a full extent of an article that recently appeared on Singapore’s Russian-run Sporthorse website, oops, we mean web portal:

Invitation to CEI* 60KM ? (Borrowe Horses) Chief Minister's International Enurance Ride 2004

EAM (Equestrian Association of Malaysia) is organizing the CEI* 60km on borrowed horses for the SEA countries invites all country in Asia that interested to send their riders for this event. The race will take place in the beutifule area of Kuta Kinabalu, Sabah on July 17-18, 2004.

Jump-Off has great respect for Singlish, so let’s not even go there.  So what do we call this?  Ruslish? Ruskie-ish?  Ruskish?  Rubb***?!

Welcome Back, Sam

After years in the wilderness, Thailand’s prodigal son has returned.  Lt. Col. Sam Aniruth-Deva, of Jump-Off XI’s “I am Sam” fame has been appointed event director of this month’s Thailand’s International Showjumping Invitation.

Wow, everyone seems so thrilled to have you back, Sam.  Really.

Brogan Injured

Jump-Off wishes Ipoh-based trainer Barry Brogan a speedy recovery.  Brogan suffered a spinal cord injury after a heavy fall from a horse on 20th April. He was able to move his legs slightly but not his hands.

The 57-year-old trainer was doing trackwork on Narcissus, the horse he rode in cross-country events at the National Horse Show last year, when the horse suddenly collapsed while rounding the 600m bend.

Brogan, champion trainer in Malaysia two years ago, was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital after the mishap.  NARCISSUS probably suffered a heart attack and was put down

Get Well Soon, Confluence

Jump-Off also sends get-well wishes to the Ratnasingham’s Confluence, the champion Malaysian racemare who snapped a tendon while racing in the Singapore Airlines International Cup on 16 May 2004.  She underwent emergency surgery in the Equine Hospital at the Singapore Turf Club to save her life.  Jump-Off hopes that this great mare will pull through.
