Equestrian Streaker Tries To Get All Black To Marry Her

Mahlah Hoffman ran onto the Rangiora Showgrounds.  Across the belly she had scrawled “Marry Me Ritchie”, directed at All Blacks flanker Ritchie McCaw.  In case you hadn’t noticed, those are Zilco Chappettes she’s wearing on her legs - Hoffman is a student at the NZ National Equestrian Academy, so naturally she goes everywhere in her chappettes.

On behalf of all Jump-Off Batangs, Mahlah, we invite you to Visit Malaysia.  Please remember to bring your chappettes to complete the “look.”

Malaysian Chappettes

Customer: “Do you sell Chapettes?”
Salesgirl:  “Sorry Madam, we are a saddlery shop.  You have to go to the Mamak stall for Chapatis.”

Siberian Snowjumping

At the recent KL Grand Prix’s website & chatroom launch, our favourite Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman said, “I want 1st champions, not 2nd or 3rd champions.  Otherwise I send you to Siberia.”

Therefore the target has been set that this year should produce a 1st champion from Malaysia of the CSI***** (that’s 5 stars) KL Grand Prix.  And as she reiterated it later, we can only assume the Sports Minister wasn’t joking.

Now that’s a different type of pressure to anything our Malaysian riders Syed Omar and Qabil Ambak have ever known.  Time will tell just how motivational it is to them.  But has anyone told the horses?

Drivin’ On

Jump-Off has heard a story about a carriage at a driving demonstration at a certain show that may or may not have bolted, and may or may not have tipped up.  The lengths organizers will go to put on entertainment at some shows nowadays.

Perhaps they were just taking their cue from Canada: the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is investigating why a man died during a Roman-style chariot race. Thomas Scarrow, 70, of Arcola, Saskatchewan, died during a Ben Hur contest.

Ancient Olympic Trivia

After the referee Troilus of Elis won two equestrian events at the Ancient Olympics in 372, a law was passed banning referees from entering them.

Jump-Off guesses that means Major Yap won’t be trying out for the next Olympic Team.

Olympic Earrings
“He's obsessed with his looks and would love a diamond earring.”
British Olympic rider William Fox-Pitt talking about his horse Tamarillo.

Congratulations

To Malaysian Veterinarian Dr Julia Smith, UPM graduate and SP&RC dressage and jumping competitor in the late ‘90s, who has passed the British MRCVS examinations.

To the Chiropractor-to-the-equine-stars Lionel Woodward and Judy Tan on the birth of their daughter Mackenzie Pei Zi Woodward, born in Singapore on 16 July, weighing in at 3.485 kg.

Welcome to Malaysia

To Sisters Magali and Gaelle Tong of Hong Kong, the first siblings from Hong Kong to compete in Malaysia on their own horses.

Welcome Back

To Roshni Selvam, formerly of Bukit Timah Saddle Club and now Dr Roshni Selvam, Veterinarian.  Roshni is back in Singapore and looking to work in the equine industry in this region.

Toni's Leap of Faith

Comeback of the year prize goes to Globe Platinum Leap of Faith, who won the 2nd SEA World Cup League season in ’98, and after four years out of competition to have a foal, returned in winning form at the Premier World Cup.  Her rider, Philippines Toni Leviste has also had a leap of faith, and is now a Muslim.

Get Well Soon

To Malaysia’s top-ranked polo player, Sariman Sarir, recovering from surgery and undergoing chemotherapy that will keep him out of polo for a year.
