BRDB and Royal Pahang share BRDB Polo success
Monday, May 23rd, 2005

BRDB-Ranhill won the 6-chukkas exhibition for the BRDB Challenge Cup yesterday at the Royal Selangor Polo Club, while Royal Pahang were easy victors of the main BRDB Cup on Saturday.

BRDB-Ranhill came back from 2 goals down to win 7-6 with a last minute penalty in the 13-goal exhibition match.   The team was made up of BRDB and Ranhill players, with both patrons, Dato' Mohamed Moiz of BRDB and Tan Sri Hamdan of Ranhill playing on the same team.  They were joined by Urbano Iturraspe (+5) and Huzaini Yunos (+4).  They beat a joint Royal Pahang and Royal Selangor team of H.R.H. Tengku Mahkota Pahang,  Sariman Sharir (+6), Matias Valasquez (+3) and  Steve Hagger and Johan Indot.

H.R.H. Tengku Mahkota Pahang led his Royal Pahang team to an easy victory over a misfiring BP Labs team.  They had already built a 3 goal lead before Chevy Beh was ejected from the game for  serious dangerous play when he struck Pahang's Amran Selamat with his mallet late in the 3rd chukka.  Amran, who was designated by Royal Pahang as a man-marker on Chevy had to be taken to Gleneagles Hospital where he was found to have a fractured rib from the blow.  Playing on with three men, the game was effectively over and Royal Pahang ran out 7- 2 1/2 goal winners.

In an earlier match, Ranhill showed they will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming RMPA International League when they edged BRDB by 6 goals to 5.  Argentinian professional Urbano Iturraspe showed why he has a handicap of 5 goals with some excellent penalty hitting and open field play.

At the prize-giving, Sariman Sharir was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) prize of the A division.  Tengku Mahkota Pahang's pony "Classi" won the Best Playing Pony award.

Kelantan Polo Club blew Royal Pahang out the B division final, running out easy winners.  Kelantan were led by their team captain Razak and club pro Zahar.  They hired Tengku Rohanim and Zamri for the tournament, which turned out to be a very good move as the Pahang professionals controlled the game from behind and led them to an easy win over their Pahang colleagues.

On Saturday RSPC-BRDB Dolphins Peter Abisheganaden combined with Quzier Ambak, Rizal Ashram and Camilla Sugden to beat RSPC Sharks.  Peter was judged MVP for the division.

In the C2 Division RSPC Cougars easily disposed of PDRM, led by club pro Jamil Mordipi, who was awarded the MVP prize of the C division.  In final match of the D Division, Masood Faizullah was MVP, leading his Piranhas team to victory over the Barracudas.

BRDB put on an excellent tournament.  The polo was very good and the hospitality even better.  There were functions every evening, from light meals to full barbecue dinner and entertainment by the Small Stones band.

His Majesty the Sultan of Pahang attended most of the tournament, though he could not be there for the prize-giving.  Farouk Khan and Tengku Nong Fatimah gave away the prizes.
