The wildest colts make the best horses. ~ Plutarch
Ding-Dong
A prominent international judge on an international judging mission thought there was a ghost in her hotel room because someone or something kept ringing the doorbell. It didn’t stop even though security couldn’t spot anyone outside her door. It was so eerie that she asked for a change of room and was just about the move when the bellhop heard the ding-dong too. He traced it to the ringtone of the mobile phone that she had been given to use by the National Federation while she was in that country.
Taking the salute at (triple) X
Jump-Off wonders which former FEI World Dressage Challenge judge was black-listed by the FEI for charging hookers to his hotel bill, which the host country picks up. And how said dressage judge still gets away with being an “advisor” to a South East Asian jumping team.
Malas-nye or Malaise
We know it’s a Russkie website from TLOTB, but surely even they know how to spell "Malaysia"?
And what happened to the much vaunted Forum of said Russkie website, which had eleventy dozen categories but only 29 registered users? Can you spell “Malaise”?
Thrilla in Manila?
Manila has a wonderful new website with an interesting equestrian pictogram of what looks like an eagle on a horse. (You'll have to forgive us if it's some other kind of bird.) You can find it on their pictogram page which shows all the pictograms of all 43 sports that are part of the Manila South East Asian Games.
There is still no place for real sports like Hockey, Rugby or Cricket this SEA Games, yet there is Arnis, Chess and Dance Sport. Yes, Arnis, a game so popular we can't even find it in a standard dictionary.
Another day in Paradise
Good luck to the other countries flying into Manila for the 23rd South East Asian Games. Our advice is to bring plenty of hay and water and settle in for a long wait on the tarmac while they get their act and forklifts together to get your pallets of horses off the plane. Yes, you read that right, forklifts.
Brudders
Jump-Off was surprised to see a nice photo of Quzier run with a Malay Mail article about Qabil that was published on Monday 31st October.
Jump-Off realizes that Qabil is no longer the stick-thin 30 kg he used to be, and brothers they may be, but surely even to the layman he doesn’t look all that similar to Quzier, especially when on a horse.
Most Eligible Riders
Two of the girls who rode for Hong Kong in the SEA World Cup League as extras don’t actually have HK passports. Apparently it is difficult to get a Hong Kong passport if you aren’t Chinese and born in Hong Kong. Neither, apparently, is it necessary. Eight of Hong Kong’s competitors at the 2004 Athens Olympics did not have HK passports, yet were allowed by the IOC to compete for Hong Kong.
With Hong Kong hosting the equestrian events of the 2008 Olympics, will we see a sudden change of nationality by some top riders?
HK Democracy
Matt Pearce, a longtime Hong Kong resident was jailed after dressing up as a horse, running on race track to promote democracy.
All Jump-Off wants to know is if he had a Hong Kong passport.
Dress for Success
Judges and spectators have commented on the sloppy dress of some riders as they walk jumping courses, some without wearing their riding boots or in sleeveless shirts. Perhaps their role model is the visiting South East Asian World Cup rider who is said to have broken all the rules in taking her horse for a hack on the main racetrack of the Selangor Turf Club one afternoon. Not only was the track out of bounds, she was riding in shorts, flip flops and without a helmet.
Horse stabbed at Gas Station
Lois
Baden, known to some as "Lady Godiva," can be seen almost every day
riding her six-year-old horse, Ryan, right through the congestion and urban
sprawl of Atlantic Boulevard traffic. But Ryan won't be out and about for the time
being. Someone stabbed the horse right in his chest cavity at
a BP station.
Jump-Off wants to know was she doing there with her horse anyway? Filling up?
Under the Pump
Perhaps it is easier to get horses to gas stations in America than it is to get a tractor to a tire pump in Malaysia. This would have taken these boys quite some time using that foot pump.
Tongue Play
A leading New Zealand jockey was told to keep his tongue in his head after winning races.
