There are only two emotions that belong in the saddle; one is a sense of humor and the other is patience. ~ John Lyons
Playing Chuckers
There are “chukkas” or the Americanized “chukkers.” And now there is the Malaysianized “chuckers.”
It reminds Jump-Off of the person who thought “chuckers” were the guys in the black and white stripes who chuck the ball into play… or chuck players out of the game.
Playing Words
In Malaysia new words are not limited to polo terminology. One of our favourites is the use of the uniquely Malaysian ‘equestarian’, which rhymes with ‘vegetarian’. Some vegetarians even claim to have ‘equestarian’ shops.
Star Portraits
A Malaysian at the CNC* Chiang Mai this month was trying to make sense of the Thai-English used to describe some of the art hung at Pack Squadron’s HQ. The Colonel who was doing the texplaining, like a lot of Thai’s, confused his “L’s” with his “R’s”. In describing an abstract painting done by that most revered of Thai creatures, he kept mispronouncing the word ‘elephant.’ Which left our Malaysian in wonderment what a painting by 'Errol Flynn' was doing hanging at Pack Squadron.
Not Admissible
A local riding club charges an “admistrative fee”. Jump-Off thinks they need the fee just to improve their spelling.
A Royal National?
Ever since the Sultan of Terengganu ascended the throne, the National Horse Show has been touted to his home state. The racing clubs that have traditionally shared it since 1994 are happy to give up the National Horse Show to Terengganu. Less forthcoming from the powers that be, however, is the traditional funding for the show.
Hus Hustles
Asian Games Bronze Medalist Husref Malik Jeremiah has hung up his eventing saddle and headed for Europe where he has offers to specialize in either dressage or jumping.
Jump-Off is certain there is no way would EAM’s threat to discipline him for speaking to the press before the games have had anything to do with his decision to retire from the sport for now.
What’s in a name, part 8169
A little pony called Falamore that is up for sale has earned kudos for dumping a level 1 coach when she went to try it. Not only did she come off twice in the space of ten minutes but the Asian Games rider who tried the pony after her came off three times in quick succession.
Jump-Off believes a change of name to Fall-some-more might be appropriate.
Auction Away
10 year-old boy who selflessly donated his pet horse to charity auction receives a gift from the winning bidders -- his pet horse back. Some horses you just can’t get rid of, no how.
MAFEC Tutup
Opened with great pomp and some circumstance just two years ago, the Malaysian Armed Forces Equestrian Centre is now closing its sentried gates to the gentry with hardly a whimper.
Bombs Away!!
…and exploding over the fence is Back Nine. He rockets to the lead…
Race-callers Nightmare
Race 3, Horses 11 and 12. ‘Nuff said.
Jock Strapped
A church-going Australian jockey was caught trying to fake his way through a urine test by squeezing clean urine out of a hidden dildo. While it is clear he just wasn't using his head, Jump-Off has to wonder at the description ‘church-going Australian jockey.’
'Polo' elephant goes mad An Elephant Polo Player in Sri Lanka was thrown when his mount decided to ride-off a mini-bus head-on. Much like normal polo then.
Appointed: Singapore’s Ho Nai Yue has been appointed Chief Steward of the 2008 Olympic Games. Congratulations to Papa Ho.
Europe-Based: Best wishes to both Putri Alia Soraya and Husref Malik Jeremiah who have taken the plunge and headed off to ride full-time in Europe.
Euthanized:Barbaro, 2006 Kentucky Derby winner who broke down in the Preakness.
Opened:The Selangor SPCA Equine Welfare Centre is now up and running at Awana
Spelling Station (formerly known as Awana Horse Ranch) in the Genting
Highlands.
Recovered: Stalwart Malaysian showjumper Quzier Ambak has recovered from a broken collarbone while playing polo at Bukit Kiara just after the Doha Asian Games.
