Malaysia and Thailand off to flying starts in SEA Games Polo
Thursday, December 6th, 2007
Malaysia turned on the style to beat Indonesia 11 - 3 1/2 in their opening SEA Games polo match at VRSC in Bangkok, Thailand today. Saladin Mazlan had an outstanding game for the Malaysians, opening the scoring 23 seconds into the match. Malaysia pegged back the 1 1/2 goals given to the Indonesians on handicap, and took the lead mid-way through the first chukka. His Majesty, Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang went to the side-lines to encourage the Malaysian team after the first chukka. The RMPA patron was saluted by the Malaysian team before their game (pic above). His presence galvanised them into action as they took charge of the match from the start and put it beyond doubt.
Indonesia fought hard and scored two penalty goals in the match, but with no field goals from open play, it was not enough to trouble the well-oiled Malaysian machine.
Thailand were also impressive in disposing of the Philippines 7 1/2 to 2 in the opening match of the day. The two King Power brothers Top and Ton Raksriaksorn played very well for Thailand, controlling the game between them. It was a slick performance by the Thai team. The Filipinos played well as a team, but being the only team in this tournament to play on horses leased from Thailand, they must have always known their fate.
History was made today as this was the first regional championship polo tournament recognised by the International Olympic Committee since the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936.
Five teams have entered this 4 to 6 goal tournament. Besides the four teams that played today, Singapore is also entered and starts with a game versus Thailand on Saturday 8th December at 3:00 p.m. Malaysia plays Philippines at 4:30 p.m. in the second match of the day.
