Malaysia thrashes Thailand in SEA Games Polo
Sunday, December 9th, 2007
Despite a change of players mid-way through the match, Malaysia thrashed Thailand 14 - 3 1/2 in their third SEA Games polo match. Malaysia's No 2, Tengku Shazril was injured and was substituted by Dato' Mohamed Moiz at half-time. They had already built up a substantial 9 - 2 1/2 goal lead, and cruised through the last two chukkas to seal their place in Saturday's Final.
Malaysia has one more qualifying match, against Singapore on Tuesday, but their place in the final is already assured because of their three wins already. Malaysia defeated Indonesia 11 - 3 1/2 in their first match, and disposed of the Philippines 11 - 1 1/2 yesterday.
Singapore had to work hard for three rough and tough chukkas before running away from Indonesia 8 - 3. The Singaporeans scored 4 goals in the last chukka to seal the win. They had led throughout the match except for a brief period when Indonesia tied the score 3-3 as Singapore lost concentration and gave away a series of penalties.
Both Malaysia and Singapore can afford to canter around and save their ponies for the final on Saturday. Singapore play their fourth match against the Philippines on Thursday but should make it to the final even if they lose to both Malaysia and the tournament's minnows Philippines.
Malaysia are the red hot favourites though, having scored 36 goals in their three matches, an average of per chukka. In fact Malaysia was well up on their scoring rate, putting 6 goals past a shell-shocked Thailand in the first chukka and a further 3 in the second chukka before easing up after half-time.
Singapore has battled to get past Thailand and Indonesia and will expect very tough time playing against their Malaysian friends in the final.
