Singapore books place in SEA Games polo final
Thursday, December 13th, 2007
Singapore sealed their place in the final of the SEA Games polo tournament with an emphatic 10 1/2 - 1 win over the Philippines. There was a change of personnel again for Singapore a Lawrence Khong came in to play the No 1 position. His man marking created space for the No 2 Satinder Garcha and No 3 Peter Abisheganaden to operate behind him.
Asad Jumabhoy had a very good game at back for Singapore despite a crashing fall in the 3rd chukka. The team finally clicked and ran up a good score against the Filipinos.
Singapore will play the unbeaten Malaysian team for the gold medal on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at the VR Sports Club.
The Philippines will not be too disappointed as they have still made it to the bronze medal match. They will play Thailand, which disposed of hapless Indonesia 6 -3 today.
The Indonesians gave up any chance of playing for a medal as their players came off asking to be substituted for what looked like potential injuries. They would be well advised to take up a non-contact sport.
Thailand finish with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses. The Philippines make it to the bronze medal match by virtue of their one win against Indonesia on Tuesday.
Thailand beat Philippines 7 1/2 - 2 in their first match last Thursday, while Malaysia beat Singapore 8 - 2 1/2 on Tuesday. On the basis of those matches, Malaysia are hot favourites to win the gold medal, and Thailand the bronze. Anything can happen in polo though, and the final day of the SEA Games Polo Tournament looks set to be a very good day.
