Ranhill-Dhanaz wins 1st National League Polo Tournament
Sunday, March 30th, 2008

The first RMPA National Polo League tournament at Royal Pahang Polo Club attracted six teams.  Royal Pahang fielded a strong team in this 6 goal tournament.  They were led by His Royal Highness Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, SEA Games stars Tengku Shazril and Adi Zamri, and Sharul Nizam.    Royal Pahang got through to the final by winning all three of their qualifying matches, beating fellow finalists Ranhill-Dhanaz 4 - 2 along the way.

Ranhill-Dhanaz aso had a strong team in brothers Saladin and Ali Mazlan, Dhanaz patron Mohd. Zekri and a very good find in ex-Johor boy Zubir.  They qualified for the finals by beating National League debutants Los Pinguinos and old-boys Rebels quite easily in their group matches.

The final was a close fought affair.  Ranhill-Dhanaz received half a goal on handicap and in the first two chukkas the match was never more than that handicap away.  Saladin Mazalan scored twice to take Ranhill-Dhanaz out to a 4 1/2 - 2 lead but Royal Pahang came roaring back to within half a goal again.  It was very exciting polo as the teams traded goals but it was the breakaway goal by Zubir that claimed th win for Ranhill-Dhanaz.

In the match for 3rd place, the Rebels saw Dato' Mohamed Moiz and Peter Abisheganaden teaming up with their old friend Yeo Kuo Lee from Singapore.  They were backed by Nattapong for this tournament.  Rebels had two wins in the group stages but missed making the final on goal difference.  Rebels beat Jogo Polo and RSPC en route to the 3rd place match, where they met Jogo Polo again.  They repeated a surprisingly easy victory over the Kiara boys, even though they were bouyed by Hayudin in this match.

Royal Selangor Polo Club lost their competitive edge when SEA Games captain Shaik Reismann came down on a slippery patch on Tuesday, shattering his collarbone.  He has had five screws put in to stabilise it and will be out of polo for approximately six weeks.  Replaced by Amran Selamat Royal Selangor fought it out with Los Pinguinos to claim 5th place by a single goal.

Los Pinguinos' Camilla Sudgen created a bit of history by becoming the first woman to play in the RMPA National League.  The RMPA Polo Leagues were formed in 2005.  This year there are a total of twenty teams competing in three levels of leagues - International (12 to 14 goals), National (4 to 6 goals) and Merdeka (-2 to 0).
