Penang wins Sukma showjumping
Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Report and photos by Peter Ibrahim Abisheganaden

Edric Lee led Penang to the gold medal in team showjumping at the Sukma Games on Tuesday.  Riding LTM Star Sasa, Edric rode double clear rounds.   Mohd Anuar and Astraphy contributed 4 and 8 fault rounds.  Syed Kamil Nafis’ clear in the 1st round and 4 faulter in the 2nd round kept Penang in the game after Shoorendran was eliminated both rounds with Mexico.  With Shoorendran taking up the dropped score, Edric had little room for manoeuvre.    As the last rider in the competition, Edric knew that all he could afford was 1 time fault.  He didn’t need even that.  He timed his ride to perfection, jumping a clear round on LTM Star Sasa, a horse few others in the competition could have jumped at all.  Penang finished the competition on 16 penalties.

Eda Wong gave Wilayah, the 2nd placed team, double clears when the pressure was on.  Third rider Ahmad Imtiaz was taken to hospital when Conterno rooted the first double at 4A, face planting Imtiaz into the B fence.   Faridah Baharum rode well to score 8 and 4 fault rounds on Sutera.  Raja Nazeem Iskandar had a time faults in both his 1 and 5 penalty rounds with Cookie N Cream.  In the final analysis these time faults were the difference between gold and silver as Wilayah finished on 18 penalties.

Selangor had the benefit of two superbly ridden clears by 3rd rider Natasha Ines on Starwickie.  Muhammad Saiful and Mexican Chilli Pepper was the dropped score both rounds as they registered 16 penalties in the first round before being eliminated in the 2nd round.  Mohamad Faiz and Roman Ghost just managed 8 faulters in both rounds.  Muhammad Anas Danial and Penrose Witchetty Grub had a clear first round and had the chance to force a jump-off if they could post another clear round.  A 4-faulter sealed Selangor’s fate, finishing with a total of 20 faults.

Terengganu finished outside the medals in 4th place, but they can be proud of their achievement.   The team did very well to finish the competition on 28 penalties.  While they could find the elusive clear round, they were the only team not to have a rider eliminated.   Their riders did not worse than a 12 faulter, and it was a case of an unlucky pole here or there between Terengganu and a medal.  It was a really impressive performance by a team of brand new riders.

The same cannot be said of the other teams.  Perak qualified two riders, Reuven Ravindra and Shastri Thiru, for the individual final but all their other rounds were eliminations.  Kedah has Amanda Sivaraj and Pepsi and Faten Nurain Syakira in the individual final.  Their team medal chances ended when their only other rider, Stacey Jane Victor was eliminated early in the 1st round.

Johor has Nabil Fikri Ismail and Aizat Malek riding very well.  Nabil had a clear and 4 faulter with Sapphire, while Aizat had 4 faults in both rounds with Red.  Their only other rider, Shaiful Azwan was eliminated in both rounds.

Kelantan’s Muhd Aminuddin rode Geronimo quite well to record a clear and an 8 faulter but in general the boys from Kelantan and Pahang were not up to this standard of competition.

Having separated the grain from the chaff, the individual final should be a god competition that can go up a couple of holes in height.
