Four fabulous Thailand Equestrian Championships

The Thailand Equestrian Championships was held at the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club in Pattaya from 1st to 3rd May 2009.  A record number of 29 clubs participated in the four disciplines that were organised: dressage, eventing, jumping and endurance.  It was the first time that the King's Cup was held at the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club, which will be the main venue of the South East Asian Equestrian Championships in December 2009.  Thai Polo & Equestrian Club also previously hosted the Eventing of the 2007 South East Asian Games, and is the home of the Thai Polo Open.

The record number of clubs did not translate well into class entries as they were spread across four disciplines.  Many classes had small entries as they were limited only to Thai Nationals who could win the classes.  It was nice to see Endurance well supported and a level of jumping that is improving again.  Thailand, though recently criticised, has been an eventing powerhouse.  The sport is well established in Thailand.  The quality of horses, especially in the jumping, shows that Thailand could be South East Asian contenders, in three disciplines.

There were three clear rounds in the final 130m class as Lalitya Rangsit, then Dhewin Manathanya and Chano Boonpongsa fought out the placings.  Dhewin and Chano had to jump-off for the championships which went to Chano and Napolean after Dhewin and Tesco spectacularly fell at the final fence after trying to one stride the two striding double.

The winners of the main classes were:
